Five local charities have been given donations totalling nearly £20,000 from Cam Valley Crematorium, which was raised through its metal recycling scheme.

With the consent of families, metals recovered during cremation are recycled and any money raised at each of the 34 crematoria and cemeteries nationwide operated by Westerleigh Group is used to support local worthy causes.

Cam Valley Crematorium has donated £10,000 to Arthur Rank Hospice, £3,000 to Stars Cambridge, £3,000 to Home Start, £2,863.72 to Cruse, and £1,000 to Uttlesford Foodbank.

Claire Butcher, Site Manager of the crematorium, said: “We have close links to Arthur Rank Hospice, which provides outstanding care to terminally-ill people, and those in need of respite and rehabilitation.

“Stars Cambridge supports children following bereavement, with a range of vital specialist services including counselling and home visits.

“Cruse supports adults who are coping with bereavement, providing them with essential support.

“Like many foodbanks throughout the UK, Uttlesford Foodbank has seen a huge increase in the number of families turning to them for help because of the pandemic.

“No one should be going hungry in this day and age, and foodbanks are providing essential help to those who are struggling to feed their families during these particularly challenging times.

“Home Start helps single parents who are struggling with mental health issues, feelings of isolation and those coping with bereavement.

“We chose these charities because they all do such incredible work trying to enhance and make a positive difference to the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our communities, and it’s an honour to be able to provide them with some financial support.”
